Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the nation's oldest technological institute, which ranks among the nation's top 50 research universities, seeks a highly accomplished tenured full Professor for the position of Center Director for Materials, Devices, and Integrated Systems (MDIS).
Under the leadership of President Shirley Ann Jackson, Ph.D., The Rensselaer Plan was launched in 2000, which propelled the Institute into a new—and transformative—direction, with new priorities, strategic investments, and a vision to greatly enhance research. With this new emphasis, research funding has dramatically increased, the faculty has been significantly expanded, and student enrollments and quality are up, reflecting a dynamic environment with an unprecedented building boom.
The Center Director position, in reporting to the Vice President for Research, will lead strategic research efforts in the fields of advanced materials, devices, and integrated systems, encompassing leading-edge technologies such as advanced photonics, compound semiconductors, and wide bandgap semiconductors using gallium nitrides, graphene, and other non-silicon-based materials. The Center Director will supervise the Center's team of administrators and technicians and oversee utilization of a state-of-the-art clean room and other core research facilities. The Center Director is expected to drive this new frontier of research and technology with emphasis on the development of large sponsored research proposals, grants, and programs, as well as forging partnerships with other universities, industry, and federal laboratories.
Rensselaer is a highly-ranked, comprehensive technological research university with annual sponsored research grants in excess of $100 million dollars, and is classified as a RU/VH Institution by the Carnegie Foundation. The Institute consists of 556 faculty and 6,900 undergraduate and graduate students who participate in rigorous courses of study and conduct research in the Schools of Engineering; Science; Architecture; Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences; and the Lally School of Management & Technology.
The successful candidate must have achieved the rank of tenured full Professor with experience in launching and leading large research grants funded through federal agencies or private industry. The Center Director should possess a record of accomplishment in an Engineering or Science discipline relevant to the development of advanced materials, devices, and integrated systems.
