The University of California, Santa Barbara (UC Santa Barbara) seeks a dynamic, visionary administrator and distinguished scholar to serve as its next Sara Miller McCune Dean of Social Sciences in the College of Letters and Science. The next Dean will possess outstanding leadership skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with faculty members and other administrators to further enhance the research, teaching, and public missions of the Division of Social Sciences and the College of Letters and Science.

A member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), UC Santa Barbara is one of the nation’s leading public, research institutions, serving close to 23,000 students, including approximately 3,000 graduate students. Over the last decade, UC Santa Barbara has heightened its regional, national, and international profile and impact, expanding its research portfolio and launching cross-disciplinary and innovative scholarly initiatives.

The Division of Social Sciences is renowned for the quality of its faculty and students; cutting edge and high impact research, scholarship, and outreach; top ranked academic programs; and its commitment to ethnic and gender diversity and social engagement.

Reporting to the Executive Vice Chancellor and working closely with the other deans in the College of Letters and Science, the successful candidate will possess a holistic understanding of and appreciation for the various departments, programs, and research centers that make up the Division. It includes twelve departments and programs—Anthropology, Asian American Studies, Black Studies, Chicana and Chicano Studies, Communication, Economics, Exercise and Sports Studies, Feminist Studies, Global Studies, Military Science, Political Science, and Sociology—and a broad array of interdisciplinary research centers. Understanding the interplay among these areas and encouraging collaboration within them, as well as across the campus, will be paramount to achieving greater visibility for and understanding of the Division within UC Santa Barbara and beyond.

To successfully serve in this leadership role, the Dean will address several opportunities and challenges:

  • Develop and implement a vision for the continued growth and prominence of the social sciences across UC Santa Barbara’s campus and academic divisions
  • Articulate and promote the value of the UC Santa Barbara Social Sciences within the university community and beyond
  • Maintain and extend the Division’s commitment to interdisciplinarity
  • Manage a complex and diverse set of programs within a culture of shared governance
  • Empower and strengthen the quality and diversity of faculty, staff, and students
  • Ensure the financial strength of the Division
