The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has selected Jay Williams as its new President, effective July 17, 2017.
Until late January, Mr. Williams served as Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development at the United States Department of Commerce. In this Senate- confirmed position, he worked with local stakeholders across the country to help drive job creation in economically distressed regions, leveraging and integrating more than $15 billion of federal economic development investments.
Prior to joining the Obama Administration in 2012, Mr. Williams served as the transformative Mayor of Youngstown, Ohio. Initially as Executive Director of Youngstown's Community Development Agency, and then as Mayor, Williams oversaw and then implemented an award-winning initiative, "Youngstown 2010." This initiative catalyzed a far-reaching and ongoing transformation of a former rust-belt city into an increasingly economically diverse and globally competitive municipality. Because of this innovative work, Williams received Governing magazine's "Public Official of the Year" award in 2009 and the John F. Kennedy Library's "New Frontier Award" in 2007.
