The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey (ACLU-NJ), the 10th largest affiliate within the national ACLU structure, seeks a dynamic leader to serve as its next Executive Director. This opening is an exceptional opportunity for an accomplished and visionary leader to further advance the profile and impact of one of the premier civil liberties and civil rights organizations in the region.
Founded in 1960, the ACLU of New Jersey is the state’s leading organization dedicated to defending and advancing civil liberties and civil rights. The ACLU-NJ accomplishes its work through a sophisticated combination of litigation, policy advocacy, public education, communications, coalition building and organizing. Whether in the courts, legislatures, or in communities, the ACLU-NJ fights on a daily basis for criminal justice reform, drug law reform, free speech, racial justice, privacy, immigrants’ rights, reproductive rights, religious freedom, due process, LGBT rights, and voting rights. With tens of thousands of members, activists, and supporters, the ACLU-NJ works in every corner of the state to defend the principle that every individual’s rights must be protected equally under the law, regardless of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability or national origin.
The ACLU-NJ seeks an enthusiastic advocate who will continue to inspire and guide the organization and will play a leading role in the civil liberties and civil rights movement in the state. The new Executive Director will be taking the helm of a strong and stable organization with an agenda of cutting edge advocacy. The successful candidate must be an exceptional leader with a deep commitment to civil liberties and civil rights. She or he must have the ability to operate comfortably at the grassroots level as well as at the highest levels of city and state government, all while acting in a non-partisan manner.
The Executive Director must have a strong knowledge of civil liberties and civil rights issues and be an effective manager who is adept at balancing internal management with external impact and visibility. The individual must be an outstanding communicator who is able to convey effectively the mission and activities of the ACLU-NJ to a variety of constituencies, as well as be able to lead fundraising initiatives for the affiliate through the cultivation of existing and new major donors and foundations.
