Williams College invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of Libraries. This is an exceptional opportunity for a talented and adept leader to continue to advance the libraries as an integral part of a Williams’ education and to collaborate on a vision for the evolving role of the libraries in learning, teaching, and research at the College.

Sawyer Library and Schow Science Library are both collaborative intellectual centers of the campus and invaluable resources for students and faculty, as well as for outside scholars and community members. The next Director joins Williams at a propitious moment, with the recent completion of the award-winning Sawyer Library in 2014. After many years of planning and building and two full academic years in this new space, the libraries are well positioned for continued success and development. With exceptional resources and institutional investment in the libraries and collections, the next Director will have the necessary support to realize new opportunities for growth and to reimagine the strategic goals of the libraries going forward.

The next Director will develop and implement a shared vision for the libraries that will support the College’s academic mission, lead a strong and talented library staff of 43, and judiciously manage the libraries’ resources, including a $6 million budget. The Director will collaborate closely with faculty and administrators to align and integrate the libraries with academic life on campus. The successful candidate will bring a deep understanding of the technological innovations and challenges facing academic libraries today, a strong commitment to intellectual diversity and inclusion, and a passion for the mission and goals of an outstanding liberal arts college. The candidate will have experience in the development and execution of a strategic vision, a record of successful staff development and team-building, and the expertise to balance support for the libraries’ traditional services with the development of new approaches to teaching, learning, scholarship, and dissemination of knowledge.
