The Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence (AI2) seeks a pioneering scholar and strategic leader to serve as its second Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
AI2 is a non-profit research institute with the mission of conducting high-impact AI research and engineering in service of the common good. Envisioned, created, and significantly funded by the late Paul G. Allen, philanthropist and Microsoft co-founder, and closely aligned with his namesake School of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington, AI2 advances the frontiers of fundamental and applied AI research and seeks innovative ways to deploy new technologies for the benefit of humanity. It employs the world’s best scientific and engineering talent in the field of AI, attracting individuals of varied interests and backgrounds from around the globe. AI2 prides itself on the diversity and collaboration of its team and takes a results-oriented approach to complex challenges in AI. AI2 offers its researchers the flexibility to pursue solutions to the most interesting problems and questions in artificial intelligence research. The AI2 ecosystem is open to and encouraging of fundamental inquiry into the transformative potential of this technology and is guided throughout by its four core values of impact, accountability, transparency, and collaboration.
Working closely with the Board of Directors, the Scientific Advisory Board, researchers, and the senior leadership team and staff, the next CEO will sustain, promote, and advance AI2’s role in developing groundbreaking initiatives and programs that advance the field of AI. AI2 sits at the confluence of many sectors in AI research as a privately-funded not-for-profit, closely aligned with a leading academic computer science program, in the heart of one of the nation’s most vibrant technology and R&D ecosystems , and dedicated to openness and equity in deploying powerful new tools and methodologies. Through its access to considerable computing resources; its nimble, flexible approach; and its mandate and dedication to tackling seemingly unsolvable problems and/or unimaginable frontiers, AI2 is uniquely situated to address the significant challenges facing the future of the field. The CEO will recognize and draw out the best ideas from AI2 and beyond, rallying a diverse research community around strategic, visionary directions that will lead to breakthrough science. Further, the CEO will ensure organizational structures and supports are in place to advance the continued excellence and growth of AI2.
