Health Effects Institute | Boston, Massachusetts
Health Effects Institute (HEI), a leading independent nonprofit research institute, was chartered in 1980 to provide rigorous and impartial scientific evidence on the health effects of air pollution. Over the last four decades, HEI has helped advance the scientific body of knowledge and informed key policy decisions in the U.S. and abroad, contributing to better air quality and improved human health. With the recently announced retirement of HEI’s distinguished President and Chief Executive Officer Daniel Greenbaum, HEI seeks as its next President/CEO an accomplished and strategic leader to develop and implement collaboratively a vision for the organization’s next chapter.
This is an exciting moment at HEI. The Institute has an active portfolio of impactful domestic and global science underway on air pollution and health, accountability, and energy. With the increased adoption of electric vehicles and zero-emission technologies, HEI also recognizes the need to be responsive to the evolving needs of its sponsors and air pollution policymakers. HEI’s next leader will guide the Institute’s response to how its environmental exposure and health research programs will evolve in the face of climate-driven energy transitions in transportation and other sectors.
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the President/CEO works closely with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders and partners to set the strategic direction for HEI, articulating long-range goals, priorities, policies, and budgets. These responsibilities include the development of HEI’s Five-Year Strategic Plan, which serves as a regular statement of and action plan for organizational and research priorities, and ensures that HEI’s science is conducted independently and with integrity.
The President/CEO develops and administers the organization’s operating budget and ensures proper management of all institutional funds. The core of HEI’s annual budget is funded jointly by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the worldwide motor vehicle industry. The next President/CEO will sustain productive relationships with current sponsors while exploring additional avenues for revenue generation that align with HEI’s strategic objectives.
The President/CEO manages HEI’s 30-person staff, which includes doctoral-level scientists and experienced administration, finance, communications, and scientific publishing professionals. The President/CEO also oversees the operation of HEI’s committees, including its Research and Review Committees, comprised of world-renowned scientific experts. This leader establishes clear communication channels with external stakeholders and describes HEI’s research and results to a wide range of public, private, scientific, and non-scientific audiences.
HEI seeks a President/CEO who is an active listener, relationship-builder, and creative problem-solver, with comprehensive management skills and experience in financial and personnel administration. This leader will have an understanding and appreciation of how science can inform the policy process and will be able to operate effectively in political settings while maintaining HEI’s commitment to providing impartial, policy-relevant, scientific research. The President/CEO will also have the capacity to manage change and empower staff in an increasingly hybrid operating environment.
