Dean, School of Law

The University of California, Los Angeles seeks nominations and applications for the next dean of the UCLA School of Law. The next dean of UCLA Law will join a dynamic community offering rich and diverse areas of expertise and programming, active and impactful centers, and a focus on preparing students for an everchanging legal landscape. Building upon the School’s traditions of inclusive excellence, community engaged scholarship, and public service, the next dean will have the opportunity to influence the future of a school where faculty, staff, and students are mutually and deeply committed to its public mission and positive impact on Los Angeles, the legal community, and the world. 

Since its inception in 1949 as the first public law school in Southern California, UCLA Law has been a pioneer and leader in legal education. With a productive and engaged faculty of nearly 200, UCLA Law is an intellectual powerhouse of the finest legal scholars in the world and has been consistently highly ranked. The dean directs and leads a staff of 185 who are deeply committed to student success and public service and administers an annual operating budget of approximately $93 million. UCLA Law currently enrolls about 1,400 students and offers four degree programs and several areas of specialization, and its 18,000 living graduates are actively pursuing careers in all sectors of engagement and in all corners of the globe. 

Leading UCLA Law is an outstanding opportunity for a highly collaborative, forward-looking, and creative leader to inspire a diverse community of faculty, staff, students, and alumni. The dean will be a community-builder who will work closely with key stakeholders to help define the next era of the School of Law and address several key priorities, including: 

  • Define a bold vision for UCLA Law grounded in academic excellence, access, and innovation;
  • Continue to invest resources in the pursuit of faculty excellence in scholarship, teaching, and service;
  • Rebuild and revitalize an internal environment where staff are supported and empowered;
  • Enhance UCLA Law’s unwavering commitment to diversity and inclusion;
  • Continue to strengthen and diversify revenue streams; 
  • Advocate for the School of Law and collaborate with partners across the University.
