Dr. Joseph Castro, a first-generation college graduate and Mexican American, has been named as the new chancellor of the California State University (CSU). Dr. Castro is the current president of California State University, Fresno (Fresno State), and will become the eighth chancellor of the 23-campus, 482,000-student system on January 4, 2020.
During his tenure at Fresno State, Dr. Castro was a proponent of recruiting and supporting students from diverse backgrounds and enhancing the overall student experience. He previously spent more than 23 years with the University of California system, most recently as vice chancellor of student academic affairs and professor of family and community medicine at UC San Francisco.
This successful recruitment, conducted during the global pandemic, was led by David Bellshaw, leader of the firm’s higher education practice, and partner Cati-Mitchell-Crossley, with the support of associate Carley Davenport.
IM has one of the largest and most diverse practices in higher education. We are committed to enhancing representation of underrepresented groups and women in academic leadership positions. Over the past five years, 49% of our higher education placements have been women and 29% have been people of color. We are particularly proud of our partnership with CSU. In recent years, IM has placed 10 campus presidents within the system, all of whom have been women or people of color.
