The Brain & Behavior Research Foundation (BBRF) selected Daniel P. Elwell, its senior philanthropy advisor, effective October 30, 2017. Formerly known as NARSAD or the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression, BBRF raises funds to invest in cutting-edge research projects to understand, treat, and ultimately prevent and cure mental illness. Reporting to Dr. Jeffrey Borenstein, president and chief executive officer, Mr. Elwell provides innovative leadership and strategic vision to the Foundation’s fundraising activities and constituent relationships in outreach to new donors. He also serves as a member of the senior management team.

Prior to joining BBRF, Mr. Elwell served as vice president of development at Christian Union where he led all development efforts for an ambitious and growing organization serving students at prestigious colleges and universities such as Princeton University, Harvard University, Brown University, Dartmouth College, and Stanford University. Previously, Mr. Elwell served as vice president of university advancement at New Jersey City University (NJCU), where he led all development, marketing, and external affairs efforts. Under his leadership, NJCU saw record years of growth in donor engagement, fundraising revenue, media exposure, and student enrollment.

Earlier in his career, Mr. Elwell served as the inaugural senior director of advancement for The Ohio State University’s New York metropolitan market and developed the region in the midst of the university’s $2.5 billion campaign. Mr. Elwell began his development career at his alma mater, Rutgers University, where he devised the strategy for and implementation of the university’s first regional fundraising program as part of the University’s first $1 billion campaign.

Mr. Elwell earned a bachelor of arts in philosophy from Rutgers University.
