Recruiting exceptional leaders for mission-driven organizations.

Associate Director General Glendale, AZ

The Thunderbird School of Global Management (Thunderbird), the newest member of the Arizona State University (ASU) Knowledge Enterprise, seeks a dynamic and entrepreneurial academic leader for the position of Associate Director General (ADG). The ADG reports to the CEO/Director General of the School and functions similar to a vice dean or associate dean for academic affairs and faculty. The ADG, a transformative leader for faculty and staff, will help propel the school into the future by developing and expanding academic degree programs and certificates, enhancing Thunderbird’s academic reputation by leveraging both the Thunderbird brand, as an international leader in global management, and the ASU brand, as innovative top research university.

For more than 70 years, Thunderbird has been a top-ranked school of international business, developing leaders with the global mindset, business skills, and social responsibility necessary to create real, sustainable value for their organizations, communities, and the world. From its main campus in Glendale, Arizona, Thunderbird’s global footprint has expanded over the years, with operations now in Geneva, Switzerland, Moscow, Russia, and Dubai, UAE. The school has often been called a “mini-United Nations” because of its diverse and inclusive global student body. Thunderbird is also known worldwide for its vast and engaged alumni network of nearly 45,000 individuals in 148 nations around the globe. Thunderbird has more than 170 alumni chapters that meet regularly in 70 countries.

In late 2014, Thunderbird became an integral piece of the Arizona State University Knowledge Enterprise, combining Thunderbird’s multi-decade heritage of developing global business leaders with ASU’s expansive resources and academic reputation. This is an exciting opportunity to join an organization that is at the nexus of two distinct and powerful brands. Thunderbird with a strong international reputation, known around the world for excellence in global management, and ASU, a formidable presence in higher education innovation, have created an unprecedented partnership to bring global education to the public in unique ways.

As a member of the senior leadership team, the ADG will help establish broader strategy initiatives and policies that impact the health and success of the school overall. The ADG will be charged with working with CEO/Director General to execute an ambitious growth agenda. S/he will serve as the senior academic leader and face for all Thunderbird degree programs within ASU and around the world. This includes taking the role of supervisory manager for all Thunderbird staff functions directly associated with degree programs. In addition, the ADG also has a responsibility for faculty affairs. Specific duties include supervising the faculty hiring process, retention, teaching assignments, contracts, and reviewing faculty performance.

To achieve these goals, the ADG will address several opportunities and challenges:

  • Inspire academic excellence and enhance the academic reputation of Thunderbird
  • Execute on an ambitious growth agenda in degree and certificate programs
  • Nurture an innovative, inclusive, and collaborative culture
  • Further integrate Thunderbird with the Arizona State University education enterprise
