Dean, College of Engineering San Luis Obispo, CA

As of January 2018, this search has reached an advanced stage.

California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), a distinguished public undergraduate and Master’s level institution located in San Luis Obispo, California, seeks a new Dean of the College of Engineering. With an outstanding student body and a committed faculty working alongside a vibrant President, Provost, and senior leadership team, the University aspires to be the nation’s premier comprehensive polytechnic university, developing and inspiring innovative whole system thinkers to serve California and the world at large.

The incoming Dean will have the opportunity to lead the College of Engineering into its next era of excellence. Highly selective and known especially for its hands-on focus and sought-after graduates who contribute immediately in the workplace, Cal Poly’s College of Engineering enjoys an excellent national reputation. U.S. News & World Report has ranked the College as one of the top five public-master’s engineering schools every year since 2000. The College is the largest of Cal Poly's six Colleges with eight academic departments and two academic programs that offer 13 Bachelor of Science degrees, nine Masters of Science degrees, and six blended/joint bachelor and master’s degree programs.

Cal Poly’s hallmark, Learn by Doing, is hardwired into the College’s own headline “Learn by Doing, Lead with Innovation” and into its project-based curriculum. A campaign is underway to bring a new epicenter for Learn by Doing to new generations of students: the Engineering Projects Center. The $40 million Center will enhance student-learning opportunities, and the Dean is seen as having a critical role in fundraising for this project—as well as other college and university-wide initiatives—and in bringing this exciting vision to life. Cal Poly’s hallmark, and what distinguishes it from many peer institutions, is its commitment to undergraduate education, which includes a strong emphasis on undergraduate projects and hands-on experiences. The Dean will also embrace opportunities presented by the rich history of Cal Poly’s Master’s degree programs, research, and highly entrepreneurial focus. In partnership with the administration, faculty, staff, and students the incoming Dean will collaboratively develop a vision that enhances the visibility and reputation of the College and leads the College into the future; drive fundraising and resource development for the College; develop close industry partnerships and relationships; foster an inclusive culture that promotes student, staff, and faculty success; and identify areas for interdisciplinary and cross-college collaboration.

Deborah Hodson is leading this search with Emily Chiswick-Patterson and Brett Barbour.
