Chair, Department of Pediatrics San Francisco, CA

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is launching a national search for a new Chair of the Department of Pediatrics. The Chair will serve as the leader of a rapidly growing Department with distinctive strengths in education, research, public service, and clinical work.

The Department of Pediatrics is primarily based at UCSF’s new Mission Bay campus, which is also home to one of the nation’s premier children’s hospitals, the brand new UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco, a 183-bed facility that provides inpatient, outpatient, emergency, and urgent care services. UCSF Health affiliated with Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland in 2014, providing the Department with an unsurpassed opportunity to meet the needs of infants, children, and young adults throughout the Bay Area. Nestled in a dynamic and unique geography distinguished by unprecedented innovations in technology, UCSF and the Department of Pediatrics are able to bring research and industry together to advance health. Over the past several years, the Department of Pediatrics has seen significant growth in clinical volume, unrestricted funds, and faculty hiring. The Department, which is comprised of 18 divisions representing the full range of pediatric specialties, is ranked 14th in NIH research with $19 million total costs and attracts top residents and clinical fellows from across the United States.

The Chair of the Department of Pediatrics will report to the Dean of the School of Medicine. UCSF’s School of Medicine ranks first among medical schools in NIH dollars awards ($519 million) and ranks among the top ten in all medical school specialty programs assessed in 2016 by US News & World Report. The School of Medicine is the only medical school listed as one of the top five in quality of research training and in quality of primary care training in the U.S. Notably, UCSF has produced five Nobel Prize winners and four recipients of the National Medal of Science. The current faculty includes 90 members of the National Academy of Medicine (formerly the Institute of Medicine) and 42 members of the National Academy of Sciences, among many other distinctions.

The School of Medicine, along with top ranked Schools of Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy and a Graduate Division comprise the University of California, San Francisco campus. Founded in 1864, UCSF is the only campus in the 10-campus UC system dedicated exclusively to the health sciences. UCSF boasts high-ranking schools of dentistry, medicine, nursing and pharmacy and a Graduate Division, as well as one of the nation’s top medical centers. From the heart of the dynamic San Francisco Bay Area, UCSF is central to the optimism, energy and innovation that contribute to the quality of life and economic vitality of the entire nine-county region.

The Chair of the Department of Pediatrics will play a key role in the continued growth and development of the Department, maintaining its strengths and building toward future successes. The Chair will help the Department strengthen its impact through cutting edge clinical care and research, progressive medical education, and personalized patient care, all framed in the context of its public mission. The successful candidate will help to shape and implement a collective vision of tripartite excellence for the Department; facilitate the successful integration of UCSF’s pediatrics program across all sites; support the continued trajectory of research and scholarship in the Department; embrace and strengthen a culture of inclusivity and commitment to diversity; support and develop the clinical work of the Department; and develop the financial resources necessary to ensure the Department’s future growth.
