Vice President for Advancement Gambier, OH

Kenyon College has named Colleen Garland, the chief advancement officer at Ohio Wesleyan University, as its next vice president for advancement, effective July 1, 2018.

As vice president, Ms. Garland will steer the strategic direction of Kenyon’s development, alumni and parent engagement, and advancement services operations, and she will work closely with President Sean Decatur, fellow senior staff, and Kenyon’s board of trustees to advance the college’s highest priorities. She will play an integral role in launching the public phase of the college’s most ambitious campaign to date, leading Kenyon’s team of advancement professionals, and partnering with stakeholders across campus.

With nearly 30 years of fundraising experience in higher education and other mission-driven institutions, Ms. Garland has a track record for leading development teams to new levels of excellence. She was the chief architect of Ohio Wesleyan’s $200 million campaign; she reimagined the University’s career services, anchoring them in a revitalized alumni network and forward-thinking mentoring program.

Prior to assuming the vice presidency at Ohio Wesleyan, Ms. Garland served The Ohio State University as assistant vice president for university development. Her responsibilities included direct oversight and leadership for the fundraising performance of 13 colleges and units. Ms. Garland previously led fundraising for the college of dentistry, where she revitalized alumni engagement and secured the college’s first ever $1 million gift.

Earlier in her career, Ms. Garland served as a senior development officer at Denison University, major gifts officer at Otterbein College (now Otterbein University), and director of development for the March of Dimes Foundation. She holds a bachelor's degree in organizational communication from The Ohio State University and is a member and past chapter president of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
