Recruiting exceptional leaders for mission-driven organizations.

Director, School of Life Sciences Tempe, AZ

Arizona State University (ASU) seeking an innovative and strategic leader to serve as its next Director of the School of Life Sciences (SoLS).

Under the leadership of President Michael Crow, ASU has developed numerous new programs and units that defy and bridge disciplinary boundaries to enable the exploration and discovery of new knowledge while developing solutions to serve Arizona and the world at large. The university has strong and simultaneous commitments to educational access, research, and teaching excellence, and assumes significant responsibility for the cultural, social, and economic vitality of its surrounding communities. ASU is ranked as the #1 Most Innovative School by U.S. News and World Report and is boldly reinventing higher education as the New American University. This strategy is built around intellectual fusion, use-inspired research, and scholarship that addresses the largest and most essential social problems of today. To meet its challenge, ASU has recruited an exceptional faculty, built 1.5 million square feet of research space, and grown sponsored research from $123 million to over $458 million since 2002, making it one of the fastest-growing research universities nationally.

The School of Life Science, housed in the Division of Natural Sciences within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, is among ASU’s largest and most distinguished units and is a leader in research and educational initiatives in biomedicine, molecular biology, genomics, bioinformatics, ecology, evolutionary biology, physiology, and sociobiology. A vibrant community of scholars, teachers, and professionals, SoLS includes over 100 tenure-track and non-tenure eligible faculty members that serve 2,800 undergraduate majors and 280 PhD and MS students in ten graduate programs. SoLS plays a critical role in ASU’s educational mission, exposing students to disciplinary breadth and depth across the life sciences, and the division has evolved over the years in response to the needs of students, pioneering new degrees and online programs, and engaging in cross-cutting, change-making research activities.

Reporting to the Dean of Natural Sciences, the incoming Director of SoLS will have the opportunity to leave a lasting legacy on one of the largest and most distinguished units at the university, and lead faculty and students in the development of inventive curricula, pioneering research, and globally renowned programs. In particular, the Director will be expected to provide strategic leadership and craft a unifying vision for the School; attend to the undergraduate and graduate educational and research missions; develop and enhance university collaborations; enable and cultivate world-class research; creatively leverage and manage resources to fuel the School’s aspirations; and recruit, retain, and support excellent faculty.

Candidates should have a PhD or terminal degree in biology or a closely related field; a distinguished scholarly record commensurate with the rank of tenured professor; relevant administrative experience; appreciation for a breadth of research areas within biology and interdisciplinary science, including a commitment to working across disciplines, academic units, divisions, and schools; demonstrated innovative and strategic leadership; experience serving a diverse student and/or faculty community; deep commitment to supporting strong academic programs necessary for student success; and an informed grasp of key issues affecting faculty recruitment, retention, and promotion.
