Director of Advancement Communications Amherst, MA

The director of advancement communications will lead a new team at Amherst, created to bring together communications and events as a cohesive team to support the campaign and advancement efforts more broadly. Reporting to the chief advancement officer, the director will work in an office where effective teamwork, collaboration, and innovation are expected. The new director will work closely with advancement colleagues as well as Amherst’s office of communications, the president’s office, and departments across the College to define a communications strategy that reinforces the key themes and stories of the College, the campaign, case statement, and fundraising and engagement milestones, and which is completely consistent with and supportive of the College’s overall strategic plan and its communications strategic plan. As a member of the advancement leadership team, the director will contribute to discussions related to the planning of a comprehensive campaign and help formulate strategies to realize its ambitious goals and objectives.

The director will initially oversee three staff and provide holistic leadership across traditional and digital media, creative, design, engagement activities, and events in order to ensure that campaign and advancement messages are consistently delivered to a wide variety of audiences across all media and platforms. In addition to external communications responsibilities, the director will also play a key role in internal communications and crisis communications within the advancement organization and in close coordination with the College’s office of communications.

The ideal candidate will have seven to 10 years of experience developing and implementing multi-faceted, integrated communications and marketing programs that elevate constituents’ perceptions of and engagement with an institution, ideally in higher education and a campaign setting. The director will have keen analytical, strategic planning and team-building skills; a thorough understanding of traditional, digital, and social media as well a direct audience engagement; outstanding staff- and project-management skills; and a comprehensive understanding of the communications process, from creative conception through execution. This individual will be a natural collaborator with the interpersonal and communication skills necessary to engage a diverse set of colleagues in the activities of the campaign and advancement overall. Candidates will have a passion for the mission, goals, and culture of Amherst and a strong understanding of and commitment to the liberal arts. Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
