Executive Vice President and Provost Iowa City, IA

The University of Iowa has selected Montserrat (Montse) Fuentes as its next Executive Vice President and Provost, effective June 28.

Fuentes currently serves as dean of the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) College of Humanities and Sciences, and will bring to the University of Iowa a record of impressive accomplishment in her field of statistics and significant administrative experience from her previous roles. At VCU, Fuentes has a held a number of other leadership roles, having served on the University Council and the Academic Affairs and University Policy Committee; co-chaired the University Strategic Planning Committee; and been a member of the University Budget Committee and the Steering Committee for Budget Redesign.

Prior to joining VCU, Fuentes headed the Department of Statistics at North Carolina State University and was the James M. Goodnight Distinguished Professor of Statistics. She has also served as center director for the Research Network for Statistical Methods for Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, a research collaborative funded by the National Science Foundation. She received a dual bachelor’s degree in mathematics and music (piano) from the University of Valladolid in Spain and a Ph.D. in statistics from the University of Chicago.
