Chair and Department Executive Officer of Family Medicine Iowa City, IA

The Carver College of Medicine at The University of Iowa seeks candidates for the position of Chair and Department Executive Officer, Department of Family Medicine. The Carver College of Medicine is part of a major research university and is ranked 13th among public medical schools by U.S. News and World Report. The College and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics are equal partners in UI Health Care. The hospital is one of the largest university-owned teaching hospitals in the United States, on the Forbes Best Employer list, and is adjacent to the Iowa City Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

The Department of Family Medicine is home to over 40 primary faculty members who are distinguished leaders in teaching, research, and clinical care. The Department provides clinical services in five locations in Eastern Iowa, houses two residency and three fellowship programs that are highly visible and selective, and maintains a robust practice-based research network around the state that is a powerful resource for research studies and data collection. The Department is one of only six in the country with a dual Family Medicine/Psychiatry residency program, and it also boasts strong clinical fellowships in geriatrics and sports medicine. Diversity is central to the Department’s mission, and faculty in the department have demonstrated a long and abiding commitment to community outreach and providing care to all populations. Notably, in 2012, the Department opened the LGBTQ clinic at the Iowa River Landing clinic. The first health-care clinic geared toward the LGBTQ community in Iowa, patients come from across the state to receive primary and specialty care at the clinic. Over 800 unique patients have received care since the clinic opened.

Under a new Dean and Vice President for Medical Affairs, Dr. J. Brooks Jackson, the Carver College of Medicine has renewed its commitment to building research excellence. As part of this broader College agenda, the new Chair will create a vision for research and scholarship in a primary care department, enhance the overall volume of research, and instill a vibrant culture of academic excellence. The Chair will have opportunities to deepen collaborations across the University and to expand research partnerships with the VA. Recruiting faculty who can broaden the research footprint of the Department and providing resources to faculty so they may pursue research questions and secure funding, are critical responsibilities of the Chair.  

The Chair leads all aspects of the department’s operations, serves as the spokesperson for the faculty, and represents the department in interactions with the College, UI Health Care, and practitioners throughout the state and nationally. Responsibilities include faculty recruitment, appointments, and evaluation; leadership mentoring; oversight of educational, clinical, and research programs; fiscal planning and management; and short- and long-term strategic planning.

Candidates should hold a doctorate in medicine and demonstrate academic credentials that qualify for appointment at the level of Professor or Associate Professor with tenure. Board certification in family medicine and eligibility to practice medicine in the state of Iowa are required. Candidates should have strong administrative leadership experience in academic medicine and the demonstrated capacity to develop leading clinical, education, and research programs. Candidates should have strong academic credentials and national stature in academic Family Medicine and demonstrated experience promoting a diverse workforce. The ideal candidate will also bring superb communication and interpersonal skills to develop strong relationships with faculty, students, staff, and potential donors.  Prior experience with philanthropy is desirable.
