Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer New York, NY

The National Urban League –a non-partisan civil rights 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization – seeks a new Senior Vice President & Chief Financial Officer (“CFO”). Established in 1910, the National Urban League (www.nul.org) is the nation’s oldest and largest civil rights organization devoted to empowering African Americans to thrive in the economic and social mainstream. Headquartered in New York City at 80 Pine Street, the National Urban League spearheads the non-partisan efforts of its 90 affiliates in 37 states and the District of Columbia, serving 300 communities and providing direct services that improve the lives of more than 2 million people nationwide.

The CFO reports to the President & Chief Executive Officer (“President”) of the National Urban League and has oversight of all matters pertaining to the management and operation of the business and finance areas of the organization. With an operating budget of approximately $65 million, and a staff of over 100 professionals, the National Urban League is supported financially by a diverse array of philanthropic, public, and earned revenue streams.

Key responsibilities for the CFO include overseeing budget planning and compliance; stewarding financial resources; managing investments; improving efficiency in operations; and implementing financial analysis and evaluation metrics. The CFO will oversee and strengthen the organization’s financial unit to facilitate the execution of the organization’s initiatives, support innovation, and fulfill the mission of the organization. This individual will also clearly communicate financial goals and opportunities to the National Urban League’s stakeholders.

The ideal candidate will be an effective leader, natural collaborator, and gifted manager with keen strategic and operational planning skills, strong financial acumen, superb staff and project management skills, and a natural bias towards action and doing. This person will have the technical skills, leadership and managerial abilities to lead a large and complex office with integrity and transparency, nurture the development of a high-performing work team, ensure fiscal integrity, and position the National Urban League as a model for excellence. A bachelor’s degree is required and an advanced degree in business, finance, accounting, or a related field, or CPA license is highly preferred. Candidates must have a minimum of ten (10) years of experience as a senior level manager, including direct responsibility for financial services and accounting operations.
