Recruiting exceptional leaders for mission-driven organizations.

Vice President for College Advancement Claremont, CA

Harvey Mudd College (HMC), the liberal arts college of science and engineering, seeks an accomplished and innovative professional to serve as vice president for college advancement (VP), to inspire new levels of engagement and to maximize philanthropic support from the HMC community. Over the last decade, the recognition and visibility of Harvey Mudd College have dramatically increased, and the college seeks a new vice president for college advancement who will elevate this work further to position the college in line with leading institutions such as Stanford and MIT.

The HMC Board of Trustees and president believe now is a pivotal moment in the history of this young college as it builds upon the success generated from its most recent comprehensive campaign and secures funds that will enhance the entire academic enterprise. The college has fostered strong brand recognition, and it offers its students unique experiential learning opportunities. It has become a beacon in higher education and in industry for its work to foster greater diversity and to create a more inclusive educational environment for all students—particularly those who have been historically underrepresented in STEM fields. At this point in its history, the college seeks a strong advancement leader who can harness the momentum of these accomplishments—a strong advancement team as well as enthusiastic alumni, faculty staff and trustees—to quickly begin work toward the next short-term, focused campaign while building for longer-term fundraising strategies and success.

The VP reports to President Maria Klawe and serves on her leadership team. In addition, the next VP will foster a culture where effective teamwork, collaboration and innovation are expected, recognized and rewarded. The next VP also will work in partnership with the president, trustees, senior leaders and key volunteers to cultivate, solicit and steward donors who have the capacity to make transformational gifts.

The ideal candidate will have experience formulating a cohesive and comprehensive messaging and communications plan; building on an existing advancement program in such a way that increased philanthropic support becomes transformative for an organization; a track record of securing principal gifts in support of an institution; and experience recruiting and mentoring a high-performing team capable of meeting ambitious goals.

Founded in 1955, Harvey Mudd College is a member of The Claremont Colleges, located 30 miles east of Los Angeles, California. It is uniquely positioned among academic institutions by educating STEM students who are also well trained in the humanities, social sciences and the arts, providing them with a broad understanding of the impact of their work on society. The college serves nearly 900 students and has a strong focus on undergraduate education; it does not confer graduate degrees.

HMC students enjoy unparalleled opportunities to benefit from small classes, hands-on research experiences and other collaborations with faculty. Nearly two-thirds of HMC’s classes have fewer than 20 students, and more than three-quarters of classes have fewer than 30 students. The faculty, in turn, benefit from strong mentoring relationships with students and are recognized for their teaching prowess and dedication.

Jack Gorman is leading this search with John Solmonese, Cathy Cotton, and David Dacres.
