Recruiting exceptional leaders for mission-driven organizations.

Chief Business Officer, Department of Neurology Nashville, TN

The Department of Neurology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC), seeks a seasoned, strategic, and forward thinking Chief Business Officer (CBO) to work collaboratively and collegially with the Department’s constituents and other leaders at VUMC. This is a unique opportunity to work with a relatively new department chair in reimagining and rebuilding the Department. The CBO will serve as a strong business partner to the Chair in further developing and implementing a dynamic strategy for revamping administrative operations and physician compensation models, with a focus on growing clinical volumes. The CBO will work in tandem with the Chair to ensure a successful pathway toward the Department’s next chapter.

Reporting to the Chair of the Department, Dr. Dane Chetkovich, the CBO will oversee all administrative research and clinical operations, financial planning and budgeting, human resources, and faculty onboarding and space planning for the department. Supported by three direct reports - a program manager and two administrative officers each overseeing clinical and research operations - the CBO supervises a nine person staff. In a dotted-line reporting relationship, the CBO will also work closely with VUMC’s Chief Operating Officer and Corporate Chief of Staff, Dr. John Manning.

In this pivotal leadership role in an academic clinical department, the CBO will further build an infrastructure that enables the Department’s 80 faculty and 40 fellows to provide excellent care to more than 3,000 inpatient admissions and more than 5,000 consultations each year. To do so, the next CBO will need to gather, assimilate, and synthesize the appropriate data to enable the Chair and other leaders within the Department to make well informed decisions. A strong foundational knowledge in finance and in managing budgets is a must, while experience with hospital finances in particular is highly desired. The next CBO will be expected to adopt and utilize the latest in analytical software to effectively organize and analyze pertinent data and information. Superb team building and mentorship skills will be critical for the next CBO along with the ability to anticipate trends and problems; troubleshoot issues; and initiate solutions through team work.
