Boston Public Schools has selected Dr. Brenda Cassellius, a seasoned educator and leader, to serve as their next Superintendent, effective July 1, 2019.

Most recently, Dr. Cassellius served as education commissioner for Minnesota from 2011 through 2019. During her tenure, she enacted comprehensive education reforms, including historic new funding for schools, all-day kindergarten, and state-funded preschool for 25,000 children. She also oversaw a period of historically high graduation rates.

Dr. Cassellius began her education career as a paraprofessional for students with special needs. She later became a social studies teacher, diversity coordinator, and assistant principal of schools in Minnesota before becoming an academic superintendent for the Memphis City Schools. From 2007-2010, she served as an associate superintendent for the Minneapolis Public Schools, and was superintendent of the East Metro Integration District in Maplewood, Minnesota, from 2010-2011.

Dr. Cassellius holds a master’s degree in secondary education and an EdD in leadership and policy.
