Chief Communications Officer Wellesley, MA

Wellesley College, the world’s leading women’s college, seeks a new Chief Communications Officer (CCO). Reporting directly to the President and serving as principal advisor on all communications-related matters, the incoming CCO will lead the Communications and Public Affairs department in creating a comprehensive communications strategy that tells Wellesley’s distinct story to a wide variety of internal and external audiences. The next CCO will work closely with the College’s dynamic president and impressive senior leadership team at a particularly significant moment in Wellesley’s history. Following a strong reaccreditation and on the brink of a strategic planning process and capital campaign, the incoming CCO will spearhead the efforts to share Wellesley’s compelling narrative and promote its mission to audiences near and far.

Wellesley is a college with a storied history. It has played, and continues to play, a decisive role in shaping leadership models for women. Founded in 1870 by Pauline and Henry Durant to "offer to young women opportunities for education equivalent to those usually provided in colleges for young men,” it opened its doors in 1875 and was the first American college to have a president, faculty, and students who were all women. Today, the College is known for the excellence of its education, the beauty of its campus, the passion of its faculty, and the uniqueness of its campus culture. But most of all, Wellesley is known for the thousands of accomplished, thoughtful graduates it has sent out into the world for over 100 years—graduates who are committed to making a difference.

The incoming CCO will have several key priorities, including, but not limited to: supporting the President in her role as chief spokesperson for the College; creating and implementing an overarching strategic communications plan for Wellesley that elevates awareness and understanding of the College and supports its mission, goals, and objectives; cultivating strong working relationships with senior leadership, faculty, alumnae, and students across the College as well as nurturing and building relationships with external constituencies; ensuring the College’s preparedness for effective crisis communications; and leading a talented staff through a self-assessment of their organizational structure, processes, and priorities. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative and strategic leader who values diversity, excels at cultivating relationships, holds a keen interest in the value of a liberal arts education, and easily garners the trust of all stakeholders.
