Dean, School of Engineering Birmingham, AL

The University of Alabama at Birmingham has named Jeffrey W. Holmes, MD, PhD, as its dean of the School of Engineering, effective in July.

Holmes joins UAB from the University of Virginia, where he was professor of biomedical engineering and medicine. He also served as the inaugural director of the Center for Engineering in Medicine. For 16 years prior to joining the faculty at UVA, Holmes taught at Columbia University and helped found and build a new biomedical engineering department there.

Holmes succeeds Timothy Wick, PhD, professor of biomedical engineering, who has served as interim dean since Iwan Alexander, PhD, stepped down as dean to join the faculty in April 2019.

Holmes holds both a doctorate in bioengineering and a medical degree from the University of California, San Diego. He has a bachelor of science degree in biomedical engineering from Johns Hopkins University.
