Recruiting exceptional leaders for mission-driven organizations.

Dean, College of Engineering Coral Gables, FL

The University of Miami (UM), a vibrant and diverse comprehensive research university focused on teaching and learning, the discovery of new knowledge, and service to the South Florida region and beyond, seeks a visionary, dynamic, and proven leader to serve as Dean of the College of Engineering. As the University approaches its centennial, the Dean will provide an ambitious vision for the College of Engineering at an historic and transformational moment in UM’s history.

Founded in 1925, UM has evolved from a teaching university, to an incipient research institution, to a modern-day Carnegie Very High Research Activity (“Research One”) university boasting South Florida’s only academic health system, top-ranked programs in marine and atmospheric sciences, and a growing innovation ecosystem tied to one of the world’s most dynamic and diverse metropolitan areas. Located on a 239-acre campus in Coral Gables, UM is integral to the intellectual and cultural community of the greater Miami area. Over 15,000 faculty and staff provide a robust educational experience to over 17,000 students from across the country and around the world. The University's 12 colleges and schools offer more than 180 majors and programs. UM ranks 57th in U.S. News & World Report’s evaluation of the nation’s top universities, and many of its graduate programs also rank highly among the nation’s best.

The College of Engineering supports 59 tenured faculty members conducting cutting-edge research and innovative teaching across the College’s five departments and into academic units and research centers across campus. The College boasts an incredibly diverse student body; of approximately 1,300 students, over half identify as people of color, about one-third hail from historically underrepresented groups, and its enrollment of 30 percent women exceeds the national average for engineering programs. The Dean reports to Executive Vice President and Provost Jeffrey Duerk, himself a biomedical engineer, and will work in concert with other deans and senior University leadership to seek out and support innovative avenues for success at the College, UM, the greater Miami and South Florida region, and across the globe.

The College of Engineering seeks an inspirational, innovative, and forward-thinking leader who will leverage the considerable strengths and resources of a leading research university located in an international city that serves as a laboratory for some of the most pressing problems faced by humankind today. They will bring high academic standards, a record of scholarly achievement, and strong managerial and leadership skills. The next Dean will also possess astute communication skills, political savvy, creativity, and entrepreneurial energy, as well as the ability to represent the College before local, national, and international audiences.

Greg Esposito is leading this search with Vijay Saraswat and David Chy.
