Recruiting exceptional leaders for mission-driven organizations.

Executive Director Portland, ME

The Bicycle Coalition of Maine (the Coalition), the State of Maine’s highly respected bicycling and pedestrian advocacy organization, seeks an energetic, charismatic, and experienced leader who is passionate about the Coalition’s mission to make Maine a better and safer place for biking and walking. This is an exceptional opportunity at a well-established non-profit that has achieved one of the strongest voices in the multi-modal, micro-mobility and transportation communities, and is poised for continued growth.

For more than 25 years, the Coalition has distinguished itself as a non-partisan, forward-thinking, and collaborative organization that advocates on behalf of cyclists and pedestrians. It has a long history of effective education and awareness campaigns, a well-earned reputation for leadership in cycling communities, exceptional and dedicated staff and board members, and a growing cadre of members and supporters.

The executive director reports to the Coalition’s board of directors, manages staff, and regularly engages with the public. The position requires someone with strong interpersonal, management, communication, fundraising, and membership development skills. All candidates must be: comfortable speaking in public; passionate about promoting safe, active and sustainable transportation; committed to diversifying our membership; building public and private partnerships; and serving communities and members across the State.

Qualified candidates will have a proven record of effective leadership at a non-profit organization, business, and/or public agency. In addition, they will have strong strategic planning skills, sophisticated organizational and communication skills, an appreciation of the challenges of running a state-wide organization, a proven ability to work with a board of directors and multiple committees, a demonstrated history of effectively working in geographically and culturally diverse settings, a history of successful advocacy and policy work, and a track-record of successfully generating and managing funds and balancing a budget.

A proven history of stewarding and supporting a membership body or its equivalent is essential, as is a personal commitment to biking and walking in their own life.
