Chief Business Officer, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Nashville, TN

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center seeks a strategic and creative individual to serve as its Chief Business Officer (CBO). The CBO will have the opportunity to lead the administration of a remarkably strong and stable department that is poised for greater prominence and impact. With a new Department Chair at the helm, expanding the department’s clinical network and growing its clinical research are top priorities.  To do so, the new Chair is seeking to partner with a CBO who brings strong financial acumen and experience in developing efficient operational functions; an innate ability to build collaborative teams; and a proven track record of establishing and further building collegial working relationships with stakeholders across a complex academic medical enterprise. The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery houses approximately 40 fulltime faculty members; 25 residents and eight orthopaedic fellows. It has an operating budget of approximately $40 million and approximately $4.5 million in research funding.

In this newly configured role, the CBO reports to the Chair of the Department, Rick Wright, MD, and in a dotted line reporting relationship to the Chief Operating Office of VUMC, John Manning, PhD in overseeing all administrative functions in research; financial planning and budgeting; human resources; marketing and communications; faculty onboarding; and space planning. The CBO oversees a team that includes a grants manager, human resources manager, financial analyst, residency coordinator, and nine administrative assistants.

The CBO also has a dotted line reporting relationship to the Executive Vice President for Adult Ambulatory Operations at VUMC, Thomas Nantais, MBA. In this capacity, the CBO provides administrative oversight and leadership of operations in the department’s Patient Care Center (PCC) in a manner that supports the mission, credo, and vision of VUMC. The CBO will work closely with the PCC’s Associate Nursing Officer (ANO) and the PCC Medical Director in maximizing clinical efficiency and ensuring appropriate clinical staffing. The CBO will work collaboratively with the Chair of the Department, and the ANO and Medical Director of the PCC in further honing and implementing strategic initiatives for clinical expansion of the Department.

The Department seeks a CBO with extensive experience working in a comparable organization who will provide a nuanced understanding and insight into the challenges and opportunities facing academic medical centers today.  Bringing in-depth knowledge and expertise in managing finances and budgets of complex units, the next CBO will communicate such information effectively and clearly to all stakeholders. Given the importance of expanding the Department’s clinical network, the successful candidate will have a proven track record in marketing and developing sound business strategies. A strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion across all facets overseen by the CBO along with the ability to solve problems collaboratively in a fast-paced environment are required.
