Recruiting exceptional leaders for mission-driven organizations.

Dean, Arrupe College Chicago, IL

Loyola University Chicago (Loyola) seeks a forward-thinking, student-centered, and collaborative leader as the next Dean of Arrupe College. Motivated by its Jesuit commitment to social justice and transformative education, Arrupe College is a trailblazing model for higher education that provides an entry point for students who would not typically be able to afford college, making a high-quality Jesuit education accessible to a more diverse student population with little to no debt.

Arrupe College opened its doors to students in the fall of 2015 under the leadership of founding Dean Father Steve Katsouros, S.J. The program, leading to an associate's degree in Liberal Arts, Social and Behavioral Sciences, or Business Administration, gives students the tools, structures, and support they need to be successful in college and enables them to transfer to a baccalaureate college through a series of deliberate experiences inside and outside of the classroom. In its first five years, Arrupe results are ground-breaking. While only 13 percent of low-income students complete an associate’s degree in two years, nearly half of Arrupe students graduate in two years - over 60 percent in three years. Moreover, nearly 80 percent of Arrupe graduates who transfer to four-year programs are on track to earn a bachelor’s degree in four years. Buoyed by the success of Arrupe, Father Katsouros is leaving to start building a network of similar colleges around the country.

Loyola is one of 27 Jesuit universities and one of the largest Catholic universities in the United States. It currently enrolls over 17,000 students on its three campuses in the Chicago area: Lake Shore, Water Tower, and the Health Sciences Campus (HSC). In addition, Loyola has a presence with the John Felice Rome Center (JFRC) in Italy. In the last decade, Loyola has experienced tremendous growth in virtually every dimension, including undergraduate enrollment, student retention, healthcare innovation, physical footprint, and academic programs. This is part of an effort to support the university to drive research, teaching, and successful student outcomes and further achieve its Jesuit and Catholic mission that emphasizes the importance of knowledge, intellectual curiosity, global perspectives, and cura personalis, which translates to “care for the whole person.”

The next Dean of Arrupe College will build upon the initial success of this innovative model of higher education. In order to do so, the Dean must embrace the Catholic, Jesuit traditions and values of the institution and its mission to serve and support a diverse student population. The Dean must demonstrate a deep commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, an unwavering commitment to access and affordability, an enterprising mindset, and should have a demonstrated track record of successfully raising funds.
