Recruiting exceptional leaders for mission-driven organizations.

Dean, Krieger School of Arts & Sciences Baltimore, MD

The Johns Hopkins University seeks nominations and applications for the James B. Knapp Dean of the Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. This is an exceptional opportunity to lead one of the world’s leading research universities for the next decade. As its academic leader, the next Dean will have a unique opportunity to build on the Krieger School’s impressive foundation and its core identity as a rigorous research-intensive school that simultaneously fosters collaboration amongst its departments and centers and across the University, provides a personalized experience for undergraduate and graduate students, and develops deep relationships with the surrounding community.

The Krieger School of Arts and Sciences has more than 325 tenure and tenure track faculty, 3,500 undergraduate students, 1,000 full-time doctoral students, and 3,500 professional masters students. The School covers a wide range of disciplines in its 22 departments in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, and more than 30 interdepartmental programs and centers. The Krieger School has benefited from the Bloomberg Distinguished Professorships (BDPs) program, an ambitious effort to recruit internationally prominent researchers and scholars at the senior rank to Johns Hopkins. The BDPs form a cadre of 50 world-class faculty members whose excellence in research, teaching, and service is centered on interdisciplinary scholarship, and is supported by a $350 million gift by alumnus Michael R. Bloomberg.

The Krieger School seeks an eminent, ambitious, strategic, dynamic, and collaborative leader with a genuinely broad intellectual appetite to serve as its next Dean. The Dean is responsible to President Ronald J. Daniels and Provost Sunil Kumar for all aspects of the School’s academic programs, research activities, fundraising, finances, outreach, and other operations. The Dean is charged with the responsibility of maintaining the highest standards of teaching, scholarship, and research, and of fostering meaningful intersections between curricular and co-curricular activities. As a senior member of the Johns Hopkins leadership team, the Dean works closely with the Krieger School faculty, the President, the Provost, the deans of other Johns Hopkins schools, and other senior officers of the University to manage the Krieger School’s programs and resources in furtherance of the University’s academic and institutional goals.

Ponneh Varho is leading this search with Jeff Kessner and Sonia Gomez.
