Chief Diversity Officer San Marcos, CA

California State University San Marcos seeks applications and nominations for the role of Chief Diversity Officer. Since its founding in 1989 as the California State University’s 20th campus, California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) has grown to serve over 16,000 students across its 43 undergraduate and 25 graduate programs. A comprehensive public university offering diverse academic programs, the campus prides itself on exemplary teaching, innovative and experiential curricula, and the application of new technologies to solve real problems. A national model for student access and success, more than 50 percent of CSUSM graduates are the first in their families to earn a bachelor’s degree. CSUSM is a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and the University enrolls more Native American students per capita than any other California State University campus. CSUSM grounds its mission in the public trust, alignment with regional needs, and sustained enrichment of the intellectual, civic, economic, and cultural life of the region and state.

The next Chief Diversity Officer (CDO) will arrive at CSUSM at a time of tremendous opportunity and will have the chance to build on existing momentum to strengthen the University’s commitment to and impact on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Reporting directly to President Ellen Neufeldt in a role newly elevated to the University Cabinet, the CDO will be an important catalyst for diversity work and create policy and procedures at the highest level to support diversity and inclusion. Working with campus leaders, faculty, staff, students, and the surrounding community, the CDO will reinforce a sense of engagement, shared accountability, and ownership for diversity, equity, and inclusion issues across the institution. As head of the Office of Inclusive Excellence (OIE), the CDO will be charged with setting clear goals and benchmarks, providing guidance, and coordinating the implementation of initiatives and efforts throughout the University and within the community.
