Recruiting exceptional leaders for mission-driven organizations.

Director of Communications

Global Online Academy (GOA), one of the world’s premier online learning organizations, seeks an innovative and collaborative professional to serve as its first Director of Communications (Director). GOA is a mission-driven non-profit organization committed to reimagining learning and empowering students and educators to thrive in a globally networked society. This is an extraordinary opportunity to strengthen the public-facing profile of GOA at an exciting and pivotal time in the organization’s history. GOA has seen significant growth since its founding just over nine years ago and now finds itself in a position to expand its global brand and increase its outreach, influence, and member engagement. The Director will play an essential role in defining how the organization’s mission is communicated to existing and prospective member schools, strategic partners, grantees, and the general public.

Founded in 2011 with ten member schools, today GOA is a 17-person virtual organization (staff work remotely from locations across the continental U.S.) that serves over 5000 students at just over 150 member schools across 31 states and 27 different countries. Since its founding, GOA has trained educators in best practices for online learning with the goal of equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and disposition to be successful in high school, college, and beyond. GOA offers middle and high school students a wide range of unique online courses and the flexibility for those students to learn on their own time. Classes are taught by dedicated, expert teachers from member schools and provide collaborative online learning environments in which students can learn about relevant, real-world topics and have the opportunity to develop independent learning skills. Through GOA’s professional learning offerings, the organization provides a range of opportunities for educators to leverage cutting edge research, expert instruction, and practical strategies in their own classrooms and schools.

The inaugural Director of Communications will develop and implement a comprehensive, high-level strategy for communicating the organization’s best-in-class, distinctive position in online education and its foundational commitment to increasing access to quality online education for all students. The Director must have a deep understanding of and passion for GOA’s unique mission, culture, and vision for impact, and should bring a record of success translating core values and results into effective communications campaigns. The Director will also serve as a strategic partner to the Executive Director and Board of Directors, and will be a key member of the organization’s senior leadership team.

This person must bring an interest in owning the full range of the communications function from creative conceptualization to implementation – comfort leading the high-level strategy and also putting that strategy into action; expert knowledge of traditional and emerging media and media relations; and the ability to articulate a vision for communications and engagement that shares GOA’s distinctive capabilities, culture, and consistent positive impact on students across the world. In addition, the successful candidate will possess a spirit of inventiveness and urgency along with high levels of intellectual curiosity, integrity, credibility, and drive. The Director must have demonstrated expertise navigating a dynamic, fast-moving, and sometimes ambiguous environment.

Katie Rockman is leading this search with Micah Pierce and Andy Marshall.
