Chair, Department of Biomedical Engineering Dallas, TX

The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UT Southwestern) seeks applications and nominations for the position of founding Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering. UT Southwestern is one of the premier academic medical centers in the United States, integrating pioneering biomedical research with exceptional clinical care and education. This is a unique opportunity to build upon the institution’s significant strengths in basic science and clinical care to create a world-class department that will generate innovative translational research and advances in patient care.

UT Southwestern’s approximately 3,000 distinguished faculty housed within its Medical School, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and School of Health Professions are responsible for groundbreaking medical discovery and translating research quickly to new clinical treatments. The Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering will leverage the expertise of these scientists, clinicians, and engineers, including more than 90 existing faculty affiliated with the institution’s graduate program in biomedical engineering, in order to conduct leading-edge research in diverse fields of biomedical engineering.

UT Southwestern is currently experiencing unprecedented growth of its research capabilities, infrastructure, and clinical applications, with significant investments being made across all domains of its research enterprise. The institution’s commitment to developing its prominence and expertise in biomedical engineering is exemplified by the forthcoming construction on its campus of the state-of-the-art Biomedical Engineering and Sciences Building, to be shared with the bioengineering department at the University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas). This shared facility will be home to UT Southwestern’s new Department of Biomedical Engineering and is intended to promote increased collaboration between UT Southwestern and UT Dallas via faculty partnership and student access to lectures, research, and labs across campuses.

Reporting to the Vice Provost and Dean of Research, the founding Chair will establish the new Department’s infrastructure and vision, recruit exceptional junior faculty, set the strategy for effective basic and translational research, and build robust relationships across campus and beyond. The Chair will bring an extraordinary record of research, a track-record of collaboration, and a broad view of biomedical engineering and its medical applications. The successful candidate will also possess strong administrative and personnel management skills, the ability to marshal resources toward strategic objectives, demonstrated success at persuasive engagement, and commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
