Recruiting exceptional leaders for mission-driven organizations.

President Rockland, ME

The Island Institute, a dynamic community development nonprofit based in Rockland, Maine, seeks an experienced, visionary, and engaging leader to serve as its president. The next president will join the Island Institute (the Institute) at an important inflection point in the organization’s history, with a new organizational structure and focus to its work.

Since 1983, the Island Institute has partnered with thousands of dedicated people who care about the coast of Maine and believe that a sustainable future for communities and the environment is crucial. The Institute works proactively and collaboratively to help Maine’s 120 island and coastal communities tackle the most pressing environmental and socio-economic issues they face. A community-based approach is the foundation of how the Institute advances its three central priorities: building resilient communities, fostering collaborative learning, and empowering courageous leaders. Programs and projects span issue areas from the marine economy, small business support, broadband access, climate and energy, and sea level rise to research and networking, education, and leadership development across Maine’s coastal and island communities.

Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the president is the chief executive officer of the Island Institute and responsible for setting its direction, stewarding and growing its resource base, and leading its talented senior team and staff. With a new organizational infrastructure and focus on impact and outcomes assessment in place, the president will be charged with implementing a strategic plan to reach the Island Institute’s fullest potential as a world-class community development organization and a leader among organizations that serve coastal and island communities. The president is the face of the Institute and will engage in significant external work across a wide array of stakeholder groups. They must be both comfortable and compelling in telling the story of the Island Institute to donors, civic leaders and policy makers, waterfront workers, partner organizations, and community leaders in Maine’s coastal and island communities.

Phillip Petree is leading this search with Elizabeth Dorr.
