Recruiting exceptional leaders for mission-driven organizations.

Chief Quality and Safety Officer Richmond, VA

Virginia Commonwealth University Health System (VCUHS) is seeking a data-driven and highly collaborative leader to serve as the system’s Chief Quality and Safety Officer (CQSO). This individual will be the primary champion for achieving the highest levels of quality, safety, and a culture of continuous performance improvement for the clinical enterprise. The CQSO will join VCUHS at an apex of growth, when focus on system-wide integration is at an all-time high. To that end, the CQSO will set the standard for quality and safety across the system by developing and implementing a strategic vision that ensures a consistent level of excellence throughout all aspects of patient care delivery.

VCU Health is an urban, multi-site, comprehensive academic health system centered in Richmond, Virginia, that employs over 13,000 full-time and part-time doctors, nurses, and support and administrative staff. It is fully aligned with VCU Health Sciences, which is comprised of five academic programs: VCU’s Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and the VCU College of Health Professions, which between them offer more than 60 certificate and degree programs from undergraduate to doctorate levels. The VCU Health System is anchored by VCU Medical Center (VCUMC) an 800-bed tertiary and quaternary complex that houses the NCI-designated Massey Cancer Center, the Pauley Heart Center, the Hume-Lee Transplant Center, the Evans-Hayes Burn Center, and the state’s top Level 1 trauma center. Other elements of VCU Health System include Children’s Hospital of Richmond, the Virginia Treatment Center for Children, VCU Community Memorial Hospital in South Hill, the newly acquired VCU Tappahannock Hospital, and an extensive array of multispecialty outpatient centers and clinics. VCU Health System is growing, as evidenced by construction of a high-rise adult outpatient pavilion and a new children’s inpatient tower in downtown Richmond. The CQSO is joining the Health System’s senior leadership team at a time when momentum is high, and VCUHS’ commitment to patient and team member safety is a top priority.

Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer of VCU Health System & Senior Vice President for VCU Health Sciences, the CQSO will collaborate, establish, and execute the system’s strategic priorities and programmatic activities around quality and safety. To do so effectively, the CQSO will assess the current state of excellence that exists across VCUHS and build upon those strengths to create a unified approach to quality and safety. To attain a high and consistent level of excellence throughout the clinical enterprise, the CQSO will promote a transparent culture in which quality and safety are paramount; personal accountability is grounded in equity and interwoven with teamwork and every member of the health system is dedicated to continuous learning.

The successful candidate will have senior leadership experience at a large and complex hospital or system, as well as a graduate degree in a healthcare related field. The CQSO will have deep experience creating a long-term vision that brings disparate groups together, as well as developing processes and policies that drive equity and enhance efficiency and consistency across an organization. The incoming CQSO must also have extensive experience in guiding and defining methodologies for quality and safety improvement, and thus be an expert in the collection, analysis, and application of data to inform policy and make change. A track record of strengthening and reinforcing a culture of quality, safety, and value across an organization or system is a must. Above all, the CQSO will have a demonstrated record of encouraging cultural competence as integrally intertwined to delivering high quality care.
