The JCC Greater Boston (JCC), a leader among Jewish Community Centers nationally and one of the largest Jewish organizations in New England, seeks a visionary, strategic, relational, and collaborative leader to serve as its next President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). This is an exceptional opportunity for an individual with proven executive abilities to lead the JCC as it plans for an illustrious next chapter.

The Jewish Community Center movement was founded in 1917 to foster and develop the highest values of Jewish spiritual and cultural life through social, educational, benevolent, and recreational activities. JCC Greater Boston was founded in the 1940’s with roots in the earlier Settlement Houses and Young Men’s Hebrew Associations around Boston, and today it is a vibrant, $23 million nonprofit organization with 1,500 members, and serving more than 50,000 individuals annually who represent 98 communities throughout the region. The JCC is a member of the JCC Association of North America (JCCA).

The JCC’s current programs include family engagement, early learning, camps, Jewish life, and family & adult wellness and health. For over a decade, the JCC has been an innovator and national leader in Jewish family engagement, and through its regionalized program delivery model, it serves many towns and communities across Greater Boston. The Leventhal-Sidman building, the JCC’s Newton headquarters, abuts 25 acres of conservation land, and recently underwent a $15+ million renovation to create innovative and adaptable learning and wellness space to meet the evolving needs of its increasingly diverse community.

The JCC has been engaged in the initial phases of a capital campaign called Our Campaign to Re-Imagine the JCC, meant to ensure that the JCC builds on the strengths of the past while investing in new resources and programs to support this dynamic and evolving community. Although the early investment focused on the Leventhal-Sidman building, the campaign’s future will be broader and will include Camp Grossman, a day camp founded in 1973, serving more than 1900 campers each summer.

While the JCC reaches more Jewish individuals and families than almost any other Jewish institution in the Greater Boston area, it also serves a diverse cross section of non-Jews. The JCC is deeply committed to fostering a diverse community that values and celebrates the uniqueness of every constituent. According to the Pew Research Center (Jewish Americans in 2020), the Jewish community in the United States has been dramatically evolving. Today, 72% of non-orthodox Jews are part of an interfaith marriage and, of those families, more than half raise their children Jewish in some way. In response, the JCC has embarked on a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiative to ensure that the JCC services and programs support the needs of this increasingly diverse Jewish and non-Jewish community, including people of color, the LGBTQ community, and those from other religious and cultural backgrounds. More than half of the JCC’s staff do not identify as Jewish, and it is estimated that 12-15% of Jews in America today are Jews of Color (Jews of Color Initiative, 2020).

Overseeing four direct reports and partnering with the JCC’s governing board of directors, the CEO will lead the JCC in deepening its effectiveness, executing on a strategic plan, engaging in strategic partnerships and collaborations, building innovative programming, growing and diversifying its revenue streams, and ensuring that the JCC remains a vibrant community for Jews and non-Jews alike. This leader must also be a strong manager who is attentive to organizational culture and values and brings deep experience in strengthening an institution’s commitment to DEI. Additionally, this CEO must be engaging, collaborative, committed to excellence, and a strong oral and written communicator, with a nuanced understanding of Jewish communal engagement.
