ASHA: Making effective communication, a human right, accessible and achievable for all.

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) seeks a new Chief Staff Officer (CSO) for Communications. ASHA is the professional, scientific, and credentialing association for more than 218,000 members and affiliates who are audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and speech, language, and hearing scientists in the United States and internationally. Approximately 300 staff work at the ASHA National Office in Rockville, Maryland.

The next CSO for Communications will join a high-functioning, widely respected, and purpose-focused organization, and will provide strategic oversight and coordination of ASHA’s communications efforts. As chief communications expert and authority, the CSO for Communications works closely with the Chief Executive Officer, the five other members of the Facilitating Team, Board of Directors, other volunteer leaders, and ASHA staff in communicating the Association’s priorities, services and resources, positions, values, and value.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a highly collegial and team-oriented environment that embraces creativity and effective risk-taking. The successful candidate will have a record of effective leadership in a mission driven organization with a full understanding and facility with communication processes from conceptualization to implementation; expert knowledge of traditional and emerging media; and the ability to articulate a vision for communications and messaging that expands multiple audiences’ knowledge of ASHA and further elevates its brand. The CSO for Communications must possess excellent management skills to lead and inspire a team. Broad knowledge of education, health care, and/or science, and an understanding of the current public policy and media landscape are beneficial. Experience working in a membership organization with a team-oriented culture is preferred. The CSO for Communications reports to the CEO and oversees a 28-person staff, including four direct reports, and a budget of just over $6 million.
