Medical Director, Clinical Oncology Services Orange, CA

The University of California, Irvine and UCI Health seek a collaborative and innovative clinical leader to oversee and coordinate outpatient and inpatient cancer services. This individual will team with the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and clinical leaders to integrate clinical research throughout all cancer services, as the organization continues to build on its strong reputation in cancer treatment, care, and research. The Physician-in-Chief (PIC) and Medical Director of Clinical Oncology Services will hold a dual role within the UCI Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center (CFCCC) and UCI Health and will join the enterprise at a pivotal time as it enhances its offerings and expands its footprint across Orange County. The PIC/Medical Director will join one of the fastest growing top research universities in the world, and will be expected to organize and grow an array of competitive oncology services in a unique marketplace that serves a truly diverse patient population. With a frame of health equity and in collaboration with world-class faculty and staff, the PIC/Medical Director will fully integrate the clinical care and research missions between the CFCCC, the UCI College of Health Sciences, and UCI Health.

Designated as a “Comprehensive Cancer Center” by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) since 1997, the CFCCC continues to serve as a vital resource for the region in the fight to alleviate the burden of cancer on the residents of Orange County. As one of only 51 NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the country and the only one based in Orange County, the CFCCC brings together scientists and clinicians from more than 30 departments across six schools at UCI. Members are organized into three themed research programs that provide an interactive and collaborative infrastructure for cancer discovery, clinical investigation, and population-based cancer research. With this rich network of collaborators and a patient population in the sixth most populous county in the United States, the PIC/Medical Director has the opportunity to impact the overall success of the CFCCC and the health of the region. Most importantly, the buildout and growth of oncology programs is a cornerstone of the strategic ambitions of UCI, and this endeavor has the full support of the University and Health Science Enterprise executive leadership team.

With a $200 million transformational gift from the Samueli family, UCI is home to the Susan and Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences (COHS). The COHS includes the School of Medicine, the Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing, the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and the future School of Population and Public Health. The UCI School of Medicine is ranked as one of the top 50 U.S. medical schools for research by U.S. News & World Report and consists of 20 clinical and six basic science departments. The establishment of this interdisciplinary college is a critical step toward building an expanded health sciences campus.

The Physician-in-Chief and Medical Director for Clinical Oncology services will join a relatively young, entrepreneurial campus that has had an impressive—and internationally recognized—ascendancy over the last several decades. This individual will join a healthcare enterprise that is in rapid expansion mode, with plans to open more clinical sites, including a new outpatient cancer center and a new specialty hospital on the University’s main campus in Irvine, California. Thus, the PIC/Medical Director will have the opportunity to capitalize on the resources and investments in clinical care to build and drive a strategy that proactively expands clinical volume and clinical trials in cancer and continues to secure UCI Health’s position as a leader in world-class medical care, research, and education. In particular, the PIC/Medical Director will continue to develop a culture of collaboration and transparency to create a truly integrated clinical cancer strategy, enhancing and seeking out partnerships across UCI, Orange County and beyond.

The successful candidate will hold a M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree or equivalent with clinical specialization and board certification in a cancer subspecialty such as medical oncology, radiation therapy, surgical oncology, gynecologic oncology, or similar field, and be eligible for appointment as an assistant, associate or full professor in the HS Clinical or Clinical X series.  An appropriate academic appointment will be determined based on the candidate’s background and experience.  The successful candidate will be an experienced and energetic senior executive with a strong record of overseeing and fostering inter-professional, multidisciplinary, and integrative practices. This individual will have demonstrated leadership the ability to work within the complexities of a competitive academic medical center to foster a positive, productive culture across a large, complex operation.
