Director of Research Administration Services Cambridge, MA

The MIT Office of the Vice President for Research (VPR) welcomes applications and nominations for the position of Director for Research Administration Services (RAS).

The Director will be a collaborative leader deeply committed to supporting MIT’s research goals through providing the highest quality of support to faculty and the research administration community at MIT.The Director is primarily responsible for the oversight of the Grant and Contract teams, providing pre- and post-award support to departments, labs and centers. RAS’ services include proposal review and approval, award negotiation and acceptance, subaward management and subrecipient monitoring, award closeout, and compliance with sponsor requirements and Institute policy in all aspects of managing externally sponsored awards. The director will oversee the resolution of complex pre- and post-award grant and contract issues associated most typically with U.S. federal and local government and philanthropic foundation sponsors, assuming hands-on responsibility when necessary, and additionally will provide leadership in the area of staff development and continuing education and create a sustainable approach to coaching, mentoring, and career development.

The next Director must understand the value, importance, and challenges of supporting world class researchers while meeting the complex regulatory requirements of a research university.

The successful candidate will possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and bring a demonstrated track record of cross-campus collaboration. The individual will have critical problem-solving abilities and creativity to effectively balance the needs of faculty, principal investigators, and administrators. In addition, the Director will be able to lead and motivate others towards the accomplishment of shared goals in support of RAS’ mission as well as previous supervisory experience that includes the professional development of staff. The Director will demonstrate experience successfully implementing new policies, procedures, and business processes, and have comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of research administration.
