Recruiting exceptional leaders for mission-driven organizations.

Chief Financial and Administrative Officer Amherst, MA

Amherst College, one of the nation’s premier liberal arts institutions, seeks a strategic and collaborative professional to serve as Chief Financial and Administrative Officer (CFAO). Reporting to the President of the College, the CFAO will be charged with achieving consistent excellence in the execution of the College’s financial affairs; stewarding the College’s considerable assets, which include an endowment that is valued in excess of $3.7 billion; managing risk prudently; providing astute financial counsel to help the College meet bold ambitions in a changing higher education landscape; and overseeing Amherst’s campus operations portfolio, beginning in 2022.

The CFAO will be a central member of Amherst’s senior leadership team, with the expertise and temperament to serve as a thought partner to the President; the credibility to serve as a respected colleague to faculty and staff across the College; and the knowledge and gravitas to serve as a resource to the Board of Trustees. The CFAO will manage a budget of approximately $34 million and oversee a staff of approximately 450.

The successful candidate will possess an impressive range of technical proficiencies and broad managerial experience, coupled with a collegial working style that will engender trust and cultivate connections with faculty, staff, and students across the institution. The CFAO must unequivocally embrace Amherst’s mission – to educate students of exceptional potential from all backgrounds so that they may seek, value, and advance knowledge, engage the world around them, and lead principled lives of consequence – and must possess a clear understanding of the distinctive role the CFAO plays in bringing that mission to fruition.

The new CFAO will join Amherst at a pivotal moment in the lifespan of the College, and will be called on to provide sound, compassionate, and transparent guidance to see Amherst through this period. In the midst of a global pandemic, Amherst finds itself on solid footing, with a sizable endowment and capable oversight, enabling the institution to bring the most promising students to the College regardless of their personal financial circumstances. Additionally, the College is on the brink of a major transition, as Amherst welcomes a new leader at the start of the 2022-2023 academic year, as President Biddy Martin prepares to retire.

A search committee composed of senior leaders at Amherst has been formed to spearhead the search for the College’s next CFAO. Confidential inquiries, nominations, referrals, and resumes with letters of interest should be sent electronically below.

Lisa Savereid is leading this search with Andy Marshall and Christina Errico.
