The University of Washington invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for the position of the Divisional Dean of the Arts.

The Arts division at the University of Washington has already established itself as a catalyst for artistic excellence and innovation on campus and in the region. The Division seeks a new dean to help build on this solid foundation, advocating for the arts and for the division within the college, across the university, and beyond.

The Arts Division is comprised of five academic units (School of Art + Art History + Design, Department of Dance, Department of Digital Arts and Experimental Media (DXARTS), School of Drama, and School of Music) that are home to a faculty that includes internationally renowned artists and scholars. The Arts Division also includes an array of public facing arts entities including the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture, the Henry Art Gallery, and the Meany Center for the Performing Arts. The Divisional Dean will contribute to the development of academic strategy and further the vision for both the Division and the College of Arts and Sciences. This individual will provide operational leadership and foster a collaborative and supportive environment across full-time and part-time faculty, students, and staff to build the academic community within the Division of Arts.

The Divisional Dean of Arts reports to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and serves as a key member of the Dean’s Senior Management team along with the Divisional Deans of Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences.

The principal duties and responsibilities of the role include the following:

  • Foster and encourage a high level of research and creative productivity within the Division of Arts, including the encouragement of research collaborations and work across disciplinary boundaries;
  • Advocate for the value of the arts both across campus and externally and oversee the ArtsUW collaboration;
  • Work closely with Art Chairs, Directors, and arts faculty to strengthen existing and cultivate new meaningful partnerships between the arts at UW and the burgeoning Pacific Northwest Arts scene;
  • Actively engage in fundraising, supporting the advancement activities of each program while encouraging the pursuit of grants and gifts for cross-disciplinary projects and curricula;
  • Encourage high standards of teaching, methods and evaluating teaching effectiveness and grading practices;
  • Represent the Division of Arts on relevant college and university committees and with appropriate external bodies;
  • Foster alignment of Division of Arts with college and university strategic goals with an emphasis on engaging with the UW Race & Equity Initiative;
  • Maintain a detailed understanding of external programs, developments, and trends broadly across the arts, particularly among R1 institutions;
  • Identify growth opportunities for the UW’s Division of the Arts

This is a full-time position with a 9-month service term and 100% tenure. The anticipated start date is Summer 2022. University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Applicants are required to have a PhD, MFA, or foreign equivalent by the start of the appointment and will hold the title of Professor within the appropriate arts unit.
