Recruiting exceptional leaders for mission-driven organizations.

Chief Information Officer Las Cruces, NM

New Mexico State University (NMSU), a Hispanic-Serving, land-grant, and space-grant institution, seeks a strategic leader and strong communicator to be its next Chief Information Officer/Associate Vice President (CIO/AVP). The CIO/AVP will oversee technology strategy, integration, and support for the entire NMSU system and serve on the President’s Cabinet. It is an exciting time at the university as the CIO/AVP will be joining a highly ambitious and newer leadership team and a very passionate and dedicated university community as they implement a new strategic plan and are committed to fulfilling NMSU’s land-grant mission.

In addition to its main campus in Las Cruces, the institution includes three community colleges across the state, cooperative extension offices located in each of New Mexico's 33 counties, 12 agricultural science centers, and an expanding distance education program. NMSU Las Cruces campus enrolls approximately 14,300 students, with 70 percent of the student population New Mexico residents. The community colleges enroll approximately 8,000 students. More than 60 percent of NMSU’s undergraduate students are Hispanic. Approximately half of NMSU’s students are first-generation college students. While each campus is uniquely positioned to serve the workforce needs of their communities, each campus functions systematically to ensure there is a strong sense of collaboration and support among students, staff, and faculty across all departments and units. NMSU is one of the most diverse land-grant universities in the nation, situated near the Mexican border on the Central and Latin American corridor. There are 23 tribes that have ancestral homeland ties to New Mexico including 19 Pueblos, the Navajo Nation, and the Jicarilla Apache Nation, Mescalero Apache Tribe, and the Fort Sill Apache Tribe.

It is a pivotal time for technology at NMSU as there is a strategic plan (NMSU LEADS 2025) underway that highlights the goal of becoming an “R1” research institution, with expanded online programming, at a time when they are readjusting practices due to COVID and reimagining how to better function as a cohesive university system. The CIO/AVP will be joining a university community ready for change in order to best structure themselves to fulfill those R1 aspirations while also ensuring their diverse population of faculty, staff, and students throughout the state of New Mexico continue to receive the services needed to be successful. With the recent centralization of Information & Communication Technologies (ICT), there is still much to be done to achieve these goals, and NMSU will be looking to the CIO/AVP to unite the university community around a strategy that involves prioritization, tough decisions, and a new governance structure for improved, integrated, and streamlined services. The CIO/AVP will be joining a close-knit community of dedicated staff who are deeply committed to providing a high level of service for the success of NMSU’s diverse community and are eager to make a large impact on the New Mexico community more broadly.

NMSU seeks both a strategic and tactical CIO/AVP who is creative and flexible in developing and evaluating innovative ideas and ways to evolve NMSU into the future. The CIO/AVP will be expected to address a set of key opportunities and challenges, listed below:

  • Drive and implement a technology strategy in support of LEADS 2025 and the academic mission
  • Foster a highly collaborative culture for relationship building, decision making, and support
  • Ensure the development and support of a highly dedicated ICT staff and other NMSU IT professionals
  • Develop rich partnerships with very diverse, external stakeholders in support of NMSU’s mission and technology efforts, and the State of New Mexico
  • Seek additional financial resources to improve a constrained budget
