The College of Nursing (CON or the College) at Michigan State University (MSU) invites applications and nominations for Dean. The College seeks an innovative, transparent, and collaborative leader to build upon its distinguished legacy and to set forth an ambitious vision that advances the missions of education, scholarship, service, and nursing practice.

Michigan State University, a member of the Big Ten founded in 1855, is one of the nation’s premier land- grant institutions, is a member of the Association of American Universities and is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a Research 1 university. The CON draws on MSU’s robust network of partnerships with health care organizations and institutions to enhance the skills of trainees and nursing professionals as well as to deliver excellent, high-quality care throughout the growing health care system. This network spans nearly the entire state of Michigan and includes the Sparrow Health System, McLaren Health and recent partnership with Henry Ford Health that will expand MSU’s presence in Detroit and create additional opportunities for clinical placements, research studies, and community partnerships.

MSU CON employs 134 total full-time faculty and staff, which includes ten fellows in the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and ten fellows in the American Academy of Nursing. Spartan nurse educators, practitioners, and researchers are transforming the delivery of health care through their innovative research approaches that improve patient outcomes. For FY21, the CON had $6.7 million in total research funding, including $2.5 million in federal funding and 46 publications that advance evidence-based practice and continual quality improvement. The CON is a founding partner in the MSU research collaborative known as The Trifecta Initiative for Interdisciplinary Health Research that unites the College of Communication Arts and Sciences, the College of Engineering, and the CON to serve as a launchpad for the interdisciplinary development of innovative computing and communication technologies to improve health care and address health disparities.

The Dean of CON reports to the Executive Vice President for Health Sciences and sits on the Executive Board of MSU Health Care. The Dean is also a member of the Deans’ Council that is chaired by the Provost and Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs. The Dean sets the vision for the College, upholds the strength of the Spartan nurse brand and reputation, and ensures that the CON is contributing to MSU’s land grant mission. The Dean will have oversight of devoted faculty and staff, will develop new efforts to increase representation, and will set the tone for a collegial culture and inclusive work climate. The Dean will build bridges within the college, across the university, and beyond to cultivate enhanced education and clinical experiences and collaborative research opportunities. The Dean will ensure that the CON is a leader and key contributor in developing and supporting innovative programs in interdisciplinary health care research, interprofessional education, health equity, and other areas.

The Dean must be a superb administrator with the ability to oversee workload and service contributions of faculty and empower program leaders and staff. The Dean will need to be visible and dedicate attention to community-building and strengthening culture on campus. At the same time, they will also serve as the external face of the CON. The Dean will embrace the current trends that are rapidly impacting the profession and position MSU as a pioneering leader for the future health care environment. The successful candidate will be a nursing professional with administrative leadership experience in nursing education, and a track record of scholarly and clinical engagement. A DNP or PhD in a health sciences discipline and eligibility for licensure to practice nursing in the state of Michigan is required.
