Controller and Director of Accounting Services Milwaukee, WI

The University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee (UWM), Wisconsin’s premier public urban research university, seeks an experienced, strategic, and collaborative leader to serve as Controller and Director of Accounting Services (Controller).

Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor, Business and Financial Services (AVC-BFS), the Controller and Director of Accounting Services (Controller) will provide university-wide controllership, financial analysis, and expert financial perspective and opinions to support and inform policy decisions made by campus leadership. They will provide vision and leadership for finance and related functions and activities at UWM, working closely with the AVC-BFS, other senior leadership, and divisional leaders to develop and implement effective strategies that respond to and support UWM’s mission. They are the University’s leading accounting expert, providing leadership for a team of 10 accounting professionals in the areas of Campus-wide Accounting, Business Unit Accounting, Business Automation/Project Manager, and Student and Financial Systems/Financial Reporting.

The role is responsible for maintaining accounting systems and a comprehensive set of controls designed to ensure that sources and uses of funds are accurately reported, comply with generally accepted accounting principles, and appropriately mitigate institutional risks. The Controller leads the effort to safeguard assets and assure accurate and timely recording of all transactions by instituting processes and oversight across the enterprise. The position plays a critical role in supporting and enhancing internal and external financial reporting and processes.

The Controller will work closely with colleagues across the university to educate them regarding financial and accounting procedures and to explore how the office can efficiently support activities that support UWM’s mission.

Successful candidates will have an accounting background and expertise obtained through progressively deeper responsibilities in complex settings, preferably in higher education or another not-for-profit setting. UWM seeks an accounting professional who has a passion for and experience with financial system implementations and an orientation toward the development of business process efficiencies. A strong mentor for staff, the Controller will have the opportunity to shape Accounting Services and the Controller’s Office via sound staff leadership, development, mentorship, and engagement. They will oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems, ensuring compliance with current GASB and GAAP standards and regulatory requirements, ensuring sources and uses of funds are properly classified, while managing the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the operations of the accounting functions, including the design of an organizational structure adequate for achieving the department’s goals and objectives. A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, or a related field and a minimum of five years of functional and managerial experience in progressively senior-level accounting/finance and reporting positions is required. A Master’s degree in Accounting, Business, or finance and/or CPA designation is preferred.
