Director for Institute Advising Center Cambridge, MA

The mission of MIT is to advance knowledge and educate students in science, technology, and other areas of scholarship that will best serve the nation and the world in the 21st century.

The Institute is committed to generating, disseminating, and preserving knowledge, and to working with others to bring this knowledge to bear on the world’s great challenges. MIT is dedicated to providing its students with an education that combines rigorous academic study and the excitement of discovery with the support and intellectual stimulation of a diverse campus community. We seek to develop in each member of the MIT community the ability and passion to work wisely, creatively, and effectively for the betterment of humankind.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) seeks an experienced and effective leader to serve as the inaugural director of the newly created Institute Advising Center. The director will play the pivotal role of ensuring that all undergraduate students admitted to the Institute have an inclusive experience and are well supported throughout their undergraduate program. The director will join MIT at a time of transformation for student support and success, after careful consideration and information gathering, based on the recommendation of the Task Force 2021 Committee on Undergraduate Advising, Mentoring and Development, the Institute has approved the creation of an undergraduate advising center where students are supported by professional advisors from admission to graduation in collaboration with departments and faculty advisors. The new director will be tasked with designing and implementing the new advising structure and in turn, building an enhanced support structure for students. The director will support the Institute’s commitment to provide a coherent and unified student academic advising experience through exemplary advising leadership, process management, assessment and evaluation, equity and inclusion, stakeholder engagement and collaboration, and continuous improvement.

A new director implementing a new central advising structure that augments and supports department advising will need to understand the complex MIT landscape that includes a varied set of services. A new director will also need to onboard a nucleus of new Institute advisors. It is hoped that these advisors will bring their own creative ideas to the planning process and will, in turn, be able to acclimate and train future cohorts of advisors. They will work with faculty advisors to guide, empower, engage, and support students from matriculation to graduation. The director will work to ensure the work of the new Institute Advising Center is student-centered, inclusive, and results oriented.
