New Museum of Contemporary Art, Toby Devan Lewis Director

Massimiliano Gioni

We congratulate the New Museum of Contemporary Art on appointing Massimiliano Gioni as its next Toby Devan Lewis Director. 

Gioni, who has overseen the Museums' exhibition programs since 2014 as the Edlis Neeson Artistic Director, joined the New Museum as a curator in 2006. In between, he has also held the roles of Associate Director and Director of Exhibitions. He has curated exhibition programs for over two decades at the Museum with a multitude of artists, as well as the 2013 Venice Biennale, the Berlin Biennale, and the Gwangju Biennale in South Korea, among many others.

With the New Museum's recent expansion, Gioni will lead the next chapter of the Museum in its ambitious exhibition programs, educational offerings, and international collaborations.

Gioni succeeds long-time director Lisa Phillips, who announced her retirement in the spring.
