Vice Chief for Clinical Affairs, Division of Hematology & Oncology, Department of Internal Medicine University of Michigan Medical School | Ann Arbor, Michigan The Division of Hematology and Oncology within the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School (UMMS) and Michigan Medicine (MM) invites applications for an inaugural Vice Chief for Clinical Affairs (VCCA). This newly created role represents a significant leadership opportunity at a moment of substantial clinical growth and system-wide transformation across Michigan Medicine’s expanding oncology enterprise.The VCCA will provide strategic and operational leadership for the division’s inpatient and ambulatory clinical programs, serving as a key partner to the Division Chief during a period of rapid institutional expansion. Reporting to the Division Chief and working closely with the Division Administrator, Rogel Cancer Center leadership, nursing and APP leaders, and health system partners, the VCCA will ensure the delivery of high-quality, safe, and accessible hematology-oncology care across a highly matrixed academic medical center.The Division of Hematology and Oncology is one of the largest subspecialty divisions at Michigan Medicine, comprising more than 110 faculty members across multiple clinical sites. Faculty and trainees deliver approximately 90,000 outpatient visits and more than 2,000 inpatient encounters annually. Most outpatient services are based at the Rogel Cancer Center, an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center that integrates multidisciplinary care across disease-focused clinics and supports a robust basic, translational, and clinical research enterprise. As Michigan Medicine continues to expand its statewide system of oncology care, the VCCA will play a central role in aligning clinical operations across Ann Arbor and regional sites to ensure consistent access, quality, and patient experience.Key responsibilities include leading the division’s quality, safety, access, and patient-experience agenda; supporting disease-group and service-line clinical leadership; and reducing operational variation across inpatient and ambulatory settings. The VCCA will collaborate with departmental and cancer center leaders to advance strategic clinical growth, including new program development, care model redesign, and recruitment aligned with institutional priorities. This leader will also champion workforce sustainability by fostering a transparent, inclusive, and high-performing clinical culture that supports mentorship, retention, and effective coverage models.The successful candidate will hold an MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent clinical doctorate, be board certified in hematology and/or medical oncology, and be eligible for licensure in Michigan. Candidates should bring demonstrated experience leading complex clinical operations in an academic medical center, along with a collaborative leadership style, strong interpersonal skills, and a commitment to continuous improvement, professionalism, and compassionate care.
