Indigenous Peoples' Land and Territory Acknowledgement

Founded in 1889, the University of New Mexico sits on the traditional homelands of the Pueblo of Sandia. The original peoples of New Mexico – Pueblo, Navajo, and Apache – since time immemorial, have deep connections to the land and have made significant contributions to the broader community statewide. We honor the land itself and those who remain stewards of this land throughout the generations, and also acknowledge our committed relationship to Indigenous peoples. We gratefully recognize our history.

THE SEARCH

The University of New Mexico (UNM) seeks a bold, creative, collaborative, engaged and dynamic strategic leader to serve as its next Provost and Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs (Provost). UNM, the state’s public, flagship research institution, is a place with extraordinary momentum, having experienced nearly a decade of transformative growth across academics, research, economic development, and student success.

The next Provost will join a thriving institution with both a clear mission and strategic direction. This is a compelling opportunity to build on UNM’s strengths and accelerate the impact of the institution across academic affairs, research, and student success at a historic university with strong ties to communities throughout the state of New Mexico.

With the Albuquerque campus occupying 800 acres near historic Route 66, UNM’s statewide footprint includes branch campuses in Gallup, Los Alamos, Taos, and Valencia, a satellite campus in Rio Rancho, technology incubators, multiple research and education centers throughout the state, and a Health Sciences Center and health system. The University is home to more than 3200 faculty across 14 schools and colleges and is a nexus for both regional and national research in established and emerging fields. UNM serves more than 28,000 students, 82 percent of whom are New Mexico residents. It is designated a Minority-Serving Institution (MSI) and is a proud member of the Alliance of Hispanic-Serving Research Universities, one of only 26 campuses designated as both Hispanic-Serving and a Carnegie R1 institution. UNM was also recently renewed as one of 237 institutions with a Carnegie classification as a Community Engagement campus.

Reporting to the President, the Provost serves as the University’s chief academic officer, leading the academic enterprise across all campuses. The Provost is responsible for the approval of faculty promotion and tenure as well as academic programs, operations, planning, and continued support and growth of the institution-wide research enterprise. The Provost is a close partner of the President and serves on the executive leadership team. They will be a key figure in the realization of the strategic plan, working to advance the institution and its academic, research, and student-success trajectories, and will guide institutional infrastructure and investments in these areas. The next Provost will possess the ambition and creativity to drive towards aspirational goals. They will possess nuanced yet sincere communication skills, the ability to collaborate, and the vision to lead in an increasingly complex landscape. They will foster collective and trust-building processes that engages students, faculty, staff, and alumni to maximize the University’s many assets and further shape the future of UNM, achieving even higher levels of impact for the University and the state.
