Commonwealth Professor of Artificial Intelligence and Environmental Sciences

The Department of Environmental Sciences at University of Virginia is searching for an Associate Professor or Professor focused on innovative application or development of artificial intelligence (AI) methods to advance the study of Earth's environmental water systems. We are seeking applicants with a Ph.D in Environmental Science or a related field, have a strong record of publication, an innovative research program, and a track record or potential for excellence in teaching and mentorship of students. The new faculty member will advance research and teaching into how AI can improve our understanding and prediction of a broad range of hydrologic science and water resources challenges and inform strategies for sustainable water management. 

AI tools, such as machine learning and data analytics, offer powerful methods for analyzing complex water data, detecting patterns, and making predictions. Topics can include, but are not limited to, local to global distribution and movement of water, hydrologic extremes, water quality, and interactions with ecosystems and people. Research should emphasize fundamental science and promote translation, providing critical insights for policymakers, industry and communities. Teaching will contribute to the Department of Environmental Sciences educational mission in the water science disciplinary areas and methods. 

The University of Virginia recognizes artificial intelligence as an important research topic and is committed to fostering multidisciplinary work in this area that builds on our existing strengths. The University is making major investments in AI research, including significant commitments in high performance computing, developing international research partnerships, and coordinating the recruitment of numerous faculty members to strengthen the AI research community across the University. As part of this cluster hire, the position will be designated as the Commonwealth Associate Professor (or Professor) of Artificial Intelligence and Environmental Sciences. The position is open for an appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor rank.

This hire will position our institution as a leader in the integration of AI and Environmental Sciences, supporting interdisciplinary collaboration and fostering research that leads to actionable, data-driven solutions. The expertise brought by this faculty member would also support partnerships with governmental and non-governmental organizations focused on climate adaptation and water resilience. The strategic addition to our faculty will enhance UVA’s capacity to address local to global water challenges and contribute to sustainable environmental practices.
