Director of Finance

MIT Lincoln Laboratory has selected Owen F. Barwell as the Laboratory’s Director of Finance and Head of the Finance Department. His appointment will begin on July 28th.

Owen joins the Laboratory with a career spanning more than 38 years in finance, accounting, and executive leadership in the federal, nonprofit, and private sectors across two continents. Previously, he served as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the nation’s regulator for commercial nuclear power plants and other uses of nuclear materials. In this role, he was responsible for a $1B operational budget. His federal experience also includes Acting and Deputy CFO roles with the U.S. Department of Energy as well as Senior Financial Advisor for the NASA Office of the Administrator. 

His research and development organization experience includes service for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, where he served as CFO, and Analytic Services Inc., where he served as Director of Enterprise Strategy and Planning. He also led financial operations for multiple nonprofit and private industry organizations. He is an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants in the UK and holds a BA degree in economics from Lancaster University.
