American Board of Pediatrics, Chief Executive Officer

The American Board of Pediatrics has named Michael Barone, MD, MPH, as its next President and CEO. Barone will succeed Interim President and CEO John Barnard, MD.

Barone currently serves as Vice President of Competency-Based Assessment at the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME). In this role, Barone established a new unit within NBME that supports the advancement of competency-based medical education (CBME) and equity in assessment. He also serves as an adjunct Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he participates in faculty development and mentoring.

Prior to his current role, Barone led the United States Medical Licensing Examination program (USMLE) and other examination and assessment programs as Vice President for Licensure Programs at NBME. Before joining the NBME in 2017, he was the Director of Medical Student Education, Associate Dean for Faculty Educational Development, and an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Barone became board-certified in General Pediatrics in 1994 and started volunteering with the ABP in 2014. He served on the Education and Training Committee for eight years and on the ABP Board of Directors from 2016 to 2017, stepping down when he accepted his position at NBME.

Barone holds an MD from Northwestern University and trained in pediatrics at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he also served as Chief Resident. He also holds a Master of Public Health degree with a concentration in health policy and management from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
